May On-Site Events

May is shaping up to be a spectacular month at our preserves from an activities perspective. There’s so much going on we decided to make it simple if you’re looking for something specific like Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo or all kinds of races. Of course, Mother’s Day is May 10 so there are plenty of events scheduled to honor Mom at the preserves. We can't wait to spend 100 days of summer with you!

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the US to commemorate Mexico's victory over the French army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Every May 5, cities and towns all over the US celebrate Mexican culture with fiestas, food, and mariachi music. Enter a jalapeño eating contest and then whack the piñata at Bay Landing or enjoy a huge taco lunch at Chesapeake Bay (VA). Lake Minden (CA) will be doing double duty – it’s the annual RC Boat Race plus Cinco de Mayo celebrations!

Mother’s Day

Sons and daughters have been celebrating mother’s since ancient times - the Greeks and Romans held entire festivals in honor of the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. In modern times, we may show Mom how much we appreciate her with cards, flowers, gifts, and breakfast in bed. This year, give something Mom something truly unique – a handmade craft! Memorial Day Weekend

Though Memorial Day is the national holiday to remember those who’ve lost their lives serving our country, it’s also the unofficial start to the summer season. Everyone has their own way of celebrating the first three-day weekend of the summer and Thousand Trails campgrounds are no different! Tranquil Timbers (WI) will be honoring our armed services twice this month with an Armed Services Appreciation weekend from May 15 - May 17 and the next week with tournaments, outdoor movie night, an afternoon pool party and much more to kick off the summer season. Join the fish fry, Patriotic Parade, picnic, and live band at Yukon Trails (WI) for Memorial Day Weekend.

Also, Chestnut Lake (NJ) will be opening their pool this weekend while also paying respects to armed forces the weekend before. Pacific City (OR) is hosting Ladder Golf (Blongo Ball) and Horseshoe tournaments this weekend with an open jam session on Friday. Seaside (OR) and Sturbridge campgrounds will be lighting up the fire pits for lots of bbq goodness. Don’t miss the annual summer carnival at Whalers Rest (OR) and wear your patriotic colors for Grandy Creek’s (WA) Red, White and Blue Parade. Every campground has some Memorial Day event happening, so make sure to check the full listings in your Theme Weekends booklet.

Summer Night Movies

What better way to top an early summer evening than with an outdoor movie? Grab bug spray, some microwave popcorn, and a blanket to sit on, a bunch of the Thousand Trails campgrounds will be hosting special movie nights throughout the summer. This month, Gateway to Cape Cod (MA) will be keeping it family friendly with G rated movies the weekend of May 15 and Twin Mills (IN) will host a Hollywood weekend from May 30 - June 1 and it’s your chance to dress up as your favorite movie star and walk the red carpet!

Yard Sale

Timothy Lake North & South (PA) campers can sell unwanted items at the yard sale. See the upgrades to the Family Lodge at Birch Bay (WA) and enjoy the opening of the pool on May 13!

Welcome Back To Camp!

Opening weekends are very exciting – grills are fired up for the first time, pools can finally be jumped into, and campgrounds are looking their best. Bear Cave (MI) will host bonfires complete with s’more while the folks at Thunderbird (WA) will be welcoming new and returning campers with a breakfast buffet. Carolina Landing (SC) will host a lunch so campers can meet their neighbors and to greet old friends. Jump in the pool or lake at Lake & Shore (NJ) to kick off a grand opening weekend.

Race Weekends

The month of May begins with the Kentucky Derby and this year is the 141st annual race. The Derby is known as "the most exciting two minutes in sports" and Twin Mills (IN) will be enjoying lots of horse racing events and will show the race on the big screen the weekend of May 2. To get in the spirit of another great race that takes place in May, Horseshoe Lakes (IN) will be hosting Hot Wheels and golf cart races for their annual Indy 500 weekend May 23-25. The Automotion in the Dells, is the annual auto show of classic cars near Arrowhead (WI) and is held May 15-17, also features live entertainment and a swap meet. Plus, Lake Minden’s (CA) annual Thunder on the Water Weekend of exhilarating Hydroplane Boat Races followed by a family barn dance is May 15-17. PA Dutch Country (PA) and Pacific City (OR) will be hosting their Run for the Roses weekend events May 2 and May 3.

Lewis County Relay for Life is open to anyone that wants to participate. It is a 24 hour event to celebrate Cancer Survivors and caregivers and to remember those that fought a good fight.

Battle of the Barbeque
An annual event sponsored by the Lake Gaston Chamber. This event features 16-18 barbeque cookers competing for the first place price. There is entertainment through the day and plates for sale starting at noon on Saturday. Event is held at the local Lions club just minutes from the park.

The Yuba City Mud Run is a 2 and 4 mile obstacle course race that combines the most rugged terrain and burly obstacles to allow those with a sense of adventure to define themselves, then bask in glory at a rocking after party with food and music

Vernon Street in Downtown Roseville closes every Tuesday in May, June and July for a street fair like no other; with a classic car show, Live Bands, a Beer Garden, the Foothill Farmers Market, a Fun Zone, plus over 100 vendors, foods and treats.

Tractor Days
Vintage Tractor Days in Oregon House California is the biggest vintage farming event in Northern California. Attendees will enjoy tractor parades, tractor games, tractor competitions, tractor driven hay rides through the county, and delicious local foods. Visit with many local vendors offering a wide variety of local merchandise and services. Many family oriented activities, including the kids pedal tractor race. There will be a raffle for a Pink Vintage Tractor proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
