Texas Treasure

A trip to South Padre Island may definitely be "Paradise Found," but you might also come away with a bit of treasure. Legend has it that the sands of the island hide many a buried treasure, some from Spanish shipwrecks, another a pirate's booty by way of Napoleon and finally, the legendary treasure of John Singer, an adventurer who made his home on the island. As the story goes, Singerís children found several Spanish coins while playing in the sand. Intrigued, Singer searched the island and found more coins, jewelry and a wooden chest that contained $80,000. Singer hid his treasure in a large sand dune, naming it "Money Hill." However, during the Civil War the family was forced to quickly evacuate the island, leaving the treasure behind. When Singer returned, the landscape and sands had shifted drastically due to a hurricane and he was never able to find his treasure. To this day, treasure hunters still search for Singer's hidden bounty.
