A Giant of a Ride

Fun Facts: The Giant Dipper, at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California, rises 70 feet in the air at its highest point, travels at a top speed of 55 miles per hour, has a maximum drop of 65 feet and has over 2,640 feet of track. It has provided thrills and chills to over 55 million riders since it opened in 1924 and is one of the few remaining seaside wooden roller coasters. Cost to ride in 1924: 15 cents. Cost to ride in 2008: $4.50. The coaster's creator, Arthur Looff, was said to have designed the coaster as a “combination earthquake, balloon ascension and aeroplane drop.” Now that's some ride!
